John Battle MP

Travellers and Parliament

John BattleLeeds Member of Parliament John Battle has always been aware of the issues concerning Travellers in Leeds and has raised his concerns in Parliament this year.

John writes:

A few months ago I had many complaints from constituents about a group of Travellers moving from site to site, particularly on playing fields. But at the same time the Travellers made contact with me to explain that they had to stay locally as their children were doing well at a local school and one of their grandfathers was seriously ill and having treatment locally.

"The key issue", as one Traveller said to me, is "they want to evict us, but where can we go? Leeds has a site for travellers but it's full up, and some neighbouring councils don't provide anything at all."

I had a debate with the Minister in Parliament and was glad to get a positive reply that they will consider including a change in the law in the Housing Bill to come before Parliament next session.
