The tradition wagon may not be as common as it once was, but like vintage cars and motorcycles many fine examples are maintained and used for showing off as well as for their original purposes.
The Fair, in Appleby-in-Westmorland, is the most famous of the Traveller Fairs in England and attracts people from all over the world.

It is a chartered Fair and occurs every year in early June. The Charter was granted by King James the Second in 1685 for the sale of goods and cattle and now includes horses.
This has been running for the last ten years and is funded by the DfES and co-ordinated by the Advisory Council for the Education of Romany and other Travellers (ACERT). It is staffed by volunteers from Traveller Education Services from around the country and currently organised by Pat Barr from Surrey TES (01932 794030 or email her) The Project has a stand on the market hill and aims to promote education with Travellers through displays, discussions, information on educational opportunities and the sale of materials. There is also an Exhibition in the town and INSET is offered regarding Traveller history, culture and language and the history of the Fair.
Lee Fair is the oldest chartered fair in the country dating from 1136. Gypsies first went to the fair in the 1540's and have been supporting it ever since.
Lee Fair dates from King Stephen's Royal Charter of 1136. Lee Fair is held in the parish of Woodkirk in West Ardsley. The first Gypsies came to the Fair in the 1540's and have supported the Fair every year where families traditionally meet up.
