Tilly Kelby was born in Salford in Manchester. In the following extract she talks about the differences between Travellers and "Country People" and her experiences of racism. Here we outline three major studies into the health of Gypsies and Travellers, all carried out in Yorkshire.
1. The Travellers Health Partnership, formed in 1999, is a partnership of Gypsies and Travellers with voluntary, statutory and community agencies and organisations. 2. A team from the University of Sheffield, led by Professor Glenys Parry, have been conducting a national study for the Department of Health. It aims to find out about the health needs of Gypsy Travellers in England. Read more
3. Finally, a Leeds study of the health needs and site availability for transient Gypsies and Travellers was recently undertaken. The study is one of very few in the U.K., which concentrates entirely on transient Gypsies and Travellers not settled in houses or on permanent sites. More here
The Travellers Health Partnership, formed in 1999, is a partnership of Gypsies and Travellers with voluntary, statutory and community agencies and organisations. The aim of this multi-agency network is to take action to improve the quality of life for Travellers in Leeds. It does this through raising awareness, highlighting areas of concern and working in partnership to promote better health through improved access to children's activities, education, health, good accommodation, employment and training. The Partnership meets quarterly and there are also Focus groups meeting monthly on Accommodation, Children and Young People, Education and Health.
