These brilliant dancers adorned one competition entry
Welcome to our community, welcome to our world, welcome…. to us! Let us take you on an adventure covering hundreds of miles. “O Baro Dive” with us. Be hypnotised with our stories of our past, we’ll sing for you, playing spoons, strumming the guitar or squeezing the accordion. We’ll dance flamenco expressing our love, families and friends as free as a bird, smiling and laughing as the procession goes by. Racing the chariots at Appleby Fair, Daj, Dad, Caj and Caro, clapping and cheering, I’m bokalo for more. Embrace us, share with us, let us welcome you, from our bowtop home.
‘Chelsea’s descriptions paint such a cultural picture – even the blind could see it.’ Jess
This jam packed picture made by Ferdinand Koci is a beautiful piece of artwork. In the picture there are horses galloping and racing and Big Ben standing really tall and proud. The time is quarter to twelve ! It has a lovely glittering lake at the bottom of the picture. There are people who have horses that are pulling the wagon and also some people playing cards. There is grand music – people are playing guitars, recorders and piano accordions. There are amazing gorgeous belly dancers and white horses by the water bathing.
‘Ferdinand’s picture has inspired Lauren to throw caution to the wind and do her own painting.’ Jess
The Roma poster is breath taking, amazingly colourful and bright. The Roma caravan (vordon) is painted and carved with beautiful spiral patterns and flowers (lulundi).
In the background people are racing on the horse (grast) and chariots, while horses (grast) are cooling down in the blue sparkling river on a hot Summers day.
All the Travellers are celebrating as they gather together to dance, play music and tell stories of their travels and their lives. The market stalls are busy with people selling jewellery, clothes and foods like toffee apples (phabaj) and candy floss.
‘Uses her language which tells me she is proud of her culture.’ Jess
Every winner has received an invitation to the Awards Ceremony and we hope that they can attend with parents/carers and a representative from their school.
Those who cannot attend will receive their certificates and prizes by post.
All entrants fondly depict community spirit. The most important part of being a Gypsy, Roma Traveller. Jess Smith
