Charity Coffee for LGI

Leeds Travellers raise money for Children’s Heart Wards at Leeds General Infirmary

A charity coffee morning held at Cottingley Children’s Centre, Cottingley, Leeds, on Tuesday 17th October, raised over £1,000 for Children’s Heart wards at Leeds General Infirmary.

The morning was organised by women Travellers from nearby Cottingley Springs in memory of Leechristy who died in March, aged 16 months, following heart surgery at the hospital. Becky Joyce, Leechristy’s mother said, "We wanted to raise money for the wards (4 and 11) to thank the nurses and doctors for everything they did for Leechristy and to help other families with children at the hospital."

The highlight of the coffee morning, and its biggest money-spinner, was a sponsored head shave by Leechristy’s dad, Lee James, and friend of the family, Adamlee Gaskin. Together they raised over £800. Inspired by the men’s efforts, Martin and Tommy Connors also went under the clippers and helped to boost the takings by a further £150. Homemade cakes, drinks and biscuits raised £75.

Counting the money

The Travellers who attended and supported the coffee morning count the money after the event.

The women raised further money with a Christmas Craft stall. "We’ve just got started!" said Becky.

Sharon Edwards the fundraising co-ordinator from the Leeds General Infirmary said "The amount that the ladies raised was absolutely brilliant".

If you would like to support the women in their efforts, please send donations direct to Sharon Edwards, Fundraising Co-ordinator, LGI, Great George Street, Leeds LS1 3EX. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Fund’, and mark the back ‘Leeds Education – wards 4 and 11’. Donations can also be made online below.

Travellers Health Issues

All research indicates that Travellers suffer from poorer health than the rest of the population. The poor environmental conditions in the form of inadequate site provision is a major contributing factor as are lack of knowledge of the system and poor literacy.
