What GRTAS did next

What's in the Future?

The GRTAS has annual objectives and performance targets set in conjunction with Education Leeds. One of these for 2007-08 is to further develop partnerships with parents and their engagement with services and other agencies.

It is too early to determine success or failure but the GRTAS has a target of increasing Traveller, Gypsy and Roma parents involved in Family Learning and active engagement with schools, nurseries and Early Years settings by 10%. A positive start to this has already been made with several parents participating in a personal development ‘STEPS’ (Steps to Excellence for Personal Success) course, which is delivered by trained facilitators from TES.

We will focus on further raising the profile of these communities and are involved in leading a national celebration of ‘Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month’ in June next year, which we will host at the Civic Hall in the form of an international conference.

We will concentrate on raising the achievement levels of the children and young people in our Children’s Centre, Schools and Colleges and widening access to further encourage life long learning.

We will continue to develop an inter agency approach to ensure that all services are aware of their responsibility in ensuring excellent service provision for these communities in line with our obligations under equality legislation and Leeds desire for every community to be valued and supported in achieving excellence.
