The aim of this ongoing storytelling project is to promote the active involvement of the Gypsy/ Traveller and Roma communities in the education of all children by building on their traditional skills as storytellers.

The six schools involved in the Project are Sacred Heart, St. Bartholomew's, Drighlington, Holy Family, Wortley High and West Leeds High.
Education Leeds Traveller Education Service was one of 5 winners out of 25 nationally who applied for an DfES Innovation Unit/Ethnic Minority Achievement Unit Design Competition.
The DfES wrote: "in announcing the successful entries I am pleased to say that your proposal to promote the active involvement of the Gypsy/Traveller and Roma communities in the education of all children by building on their traditional skills as story tellers has been selected as a 'winner' in the Innovation EMAU design competition."
As a winner the project received funding.

As part of the project we produced a Storytelling Learning Resource, Open Roads Open Minds for schools. It's DVD, Wall Poster, Storyteller & Artist Portraits all wrapped in one attractive package.

The Launch of the Project in July at the West Park Centre was attended by all 6 schools, Gypsies, Roma and Travellers, professional Storytellers and members of the TES. It was a great success.
An audio CD of seven stories called Dragonory has been specially prepared by Jess Smith the Scottish Storyteller for the Travellers Storytelling Project.
The CD is available to buy from the Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Service. Listen to one of stories to whet your appetite.
As well as the GRT team this project was pleased to welcome Richard O'Neill, Wendy de Rusett and Jess Smith.
