ResourceA DVD, Wall Poster, Storyteller & Artist Portraits all wrapped in one attractive package.

It can be used to enrich the curriculum for all children. In writing this Learning Resource into schemes of work across the Key Stages it will help in the process of ‘inculcating race equality into the curriculum and moving teaching and learning on.’

The DCSF and the National Association of Teachers of Travellers (NATT) have chosen Gypsies and Travellers in Their Own Words and the Open Roads, Open Minds learning resource as part of a purchase of Traveller resources to enrich the curriculum in all schools. The resources will be delivered to 680 schools across the UK.

This Learning Resource can be used effectively across the Curriculum – Literacy, Drama, Art, Music, History, PSHE and Citizenship and across all Key Stages 1 – 4 and for In Service Training (INSET).

This resource is unique as it links:

  • The live performance of professional Traveller Storytellers on a brilliant one hour professionally produced DVD of broadcast quality with all text and illustrations encoded on the DVD for immediate use on the whiteboard.
  • A Teacher’s Handbook, packed with ideas, all the texts, 10 A4 illustrative art posters of the stories and one A2 Poster, which are painted by the international Roma artist, Ferdinand Koci, and 10 A4 photographic portraits of the Storytellers and Artist.

It can help to:

  • Promote diversity across the curriculum.
  • DVDFor all ages and respond positively to Recommendation 67 of the Lawrence Inquiry, which requires all pupils to learn about the diversity of national, regional, religious and ethnic identities in the UK and the need for mutual respect and understanding in Citizenship lessons.
  • Develop an active attitude to reading inspired by powerful dramatic storytelling with high interest material at a low reading age.
  • Offer children an insight into the Travellers’ own world - a unique and moving experience that will provide a stimulating learning experience for all children and inspire their own creativity.
